Improving Student Success
For Academic Departments
ºÚÁϵ¼º½ applies Deming’s Model for Continuous Improvement to our practice of improving student success, and it is designed according to the following process and policy.
Process and Policy
- Define the program’s educational goals pertaining to student success at their program level.
- Select appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) for each of the goals that can accurately measure the performance, motivate and direct actions, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Apply W. Edwards Deming’s improvement model to develop, test, and implement changes for improvement.
- Hold an annual departmental review and planning meeting and focus departmental energy and effort on a couple of key performance areas each year to make CPI a sustained and manageable process.
- The institution rewards improvement with recognition on CPI Day and provides resources for qualified projects (see financially supported CPI below).

Financially Supported CPI Projects
- An academic or administrative department determines that its CPI improvement initiative requires additional funding from the institution and submits a .
- Approval of a financially supported CPI project is subject to guidance and a vote by the CPI Committee, based on .
- The vote will determine whether the project is recommended by the CPI Committee for funding.
Sample Timeline
- June: Draft proposal submitted to CPI Committee
- June – October: Feedback on proposal from CPI chairs, data collection, etc.
- October: Proposal presented to CPI Committee
- October – February: Feedback from CPI Committee provided
- February: Final CPI Committee vote on proposal
