Rothstein Explains Popular Resistance Training Methods

As seen in Peloton鈥檚 blog, The Output, , instructor and coordinator for the exercise science program,聽is featured prominently in an article about the benefits of strength training vs. hypertrophy training. Rothstein explains that, while there is overlap between both resistance training exercises, strength training refers to being able to lift more weight or produce more force, whereas hypertrophy is focused on increasing muscle size.

鈥淲hen someone is training for hypertrophy, they鈥檙e trying to elicit the greatest amount of muscle growth from their workout. The goal of the workout is to signal to the body that a bigger muscle is needed so that it adapts by growing the size of the muscle,鈥 says Rothstein. To do this, you usually need to challenge the muscle enough so that it understands it needs to improve in strength and endurance and, therefore, will grow larger, he adds.

He also provides examples of strength and hypertrophy exercises, noting that the best choice depends on whether the priority is muscle growth or strength and power.
