Nizich on Using AI for Dark Web Monitoring

September 1, 2024

To stay one step ahead of attackers, law enforcement, governments, and companies are using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the dark web, according to an article in that includes commentary from experts including Michael Nizich, Ph.D., director of the ETIC and adjunct associate professor of computer science.

鈥淢odern AI solutions can quickly identify anomalies that are happening in real-time from dark web monitoring that would take humans or even current desktop computers years to process,鈥 he said. Nizich explained that accurate identification of anomalies can automatically trigger actions to keep information safe. He also compared the dark web to an amusement park that nobody can see or know is in their town, but it  still has access points. 鈥淥nce inside the park, many of the usual attractions work as normal,鈥 Nizich said. 鈥淒ark web monitoring uses these access points to monitor the traffic and the contents of packets flowing through the networks (inside the park), and AI applied to these processes just makes the monitoring more effective.鈥
