Less Intense Training Days are Key

August 21, 2026

As seen in and , exercise physiologist and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Alexander Rothstein, Ed.D., comments on how intense exercise competitions require balance in athletes’ training. A recent study shows that engaging in high levels of resistance and aerobic exercises may help people live longer; one example is HYROX races, composed of eight 1-kilometer runs and eight functional movements. However, these competitions—and their training—may be tough on the body.

Rothstein notes that while competing in HYROX races may be a healthy form of exercise, it is critical for trainees to incorporate less-intense workouts to prevent injuries. Training too hard and getting hurt during the race may cause athletes to quit the fitness habit.
